Chevrolet Volt Owners have Collectively Driven over 40 million miles on Electricity

According to an announcement made by General Motors, Chevrolet Volt owners collectively have saved a supertanker of gasoline since the plug-in hybrid went on sale at the end of 2010. Owners of this electric car have driven over 40 million miles on electricity and thus avoiding the use of 2.1million gallons of gasoline. Based on the $3.80 per gallon of gas, the total savings at the pump is almost $8 million.

“With each click of the odometer, Chevrolet Volt owners are measuring their contribution to reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil and to preserving the environment,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. “Volt owners are also saving at the fuel pump with more than $8 million in combined savings.” Chevrolet recently introduced a rolling ticker on its website that provides the real-time daily driving statistics for Volt owners based on OnStar data. The parameters which are viewable include the results in total number of miles driven, electric miles driven and gallons of gas saved.

The Chevrolet Volt has a total driving range of up to 379 miles based on EPA estimates. Volt can drive gas and tailpipe-emissions free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery in the first 35 miles. When the battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator operates to extend the driving range to another 344 miles on full tank. Volt owners typically drive an average of 900 miles between fill ups at the gas station, according to Chevrolet.

New Chevrolet Trax Small Crossover is the Buick Encore's Global Twin - Paris Auto Show

The North American 2013 Buick Encore and its European twin, the Opel Mokka, will soon welcome a new member in their family as Chevrolet has unveiled the third variant of GM's small crossover in advance of its world premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September.
Chevrolet's version is named Trax, evidently after the company's unrelated 2007 concept. GM says the new Chevrolet Trax will be offered in more than 140 countries around the world with Mexico to be the first market to launch the crossover in the fourth quarter of this year. The small SUV will arrive at European Chevrolet dealerships in spring of 2013.
Officially, the Detroit carmaker says it has no plans to offer the Trax in the U.S.A "because of the strong position of the [Chevrolet] Equinox", but we reckon the company's decision has more to do with the fact that it has the small crossover segment already covered with the almost identical Buick Encore.
From the single picture released by GM, it appears that the styling differences between the Buick Encore and the Trax are limited to the latter's Chevy grille, redesigned headlamps and the more pronounced front and rear wheel arches.
"The Trax provides Chevrolet an entry into a growing small SUV segment and delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and car-like handling that urban explorers around the world require," said Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of Product Development.
She continued: "After a record sales year in 2011 and a record first quarter, Chevrolet continues to meet customer needs by expanding its portfolio with strong new entries."
More details including information about the available powertrains are to be published within the next few months. 

18-wheeler Flips Over and Squashes Chevy Cruze, Driver Makes it Out Injured but Alive

A male driver of a rental Chevrolet Cruze was involved in what can only be described as a nightmare scenario for any road user when an 18-wheeler truck loaded with cardboard boxes flipped on its side and landed on top of the compact sedan. The accident took place in the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway in Texas in the late morning hours of Thursday.
The large rig also knocked over the concrete center barrier and hit another vehicle, a black Volkswagen Touareg, hurling it over the median and onto the other side of the road.
The man wedged under the truck's trailer was 49-year-old Gregory Neece, who despite the seriousness of the crash, made it out alive. Neece did suffer injuries to his back and neck but according to officials, he was doing better on Friday.
According to reports, the two passengers in the Touareg were not hurt.
Police are still investigating the accident, though officials suggested that the truck driver might have lost control of the vehicle due to a shift in the load he was carrying and because he may have been going too fast.

2013 Nissan GT-R Versus 2012 Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition - Perhaps the greatest achievement for Nissan and its GT-R is that it has become a benchmark for all types of sports cars. And there's no better proof for this than the fact that in February alone, we've seen at least three publications comparing the Godzilla against a variety of new sports cars including the 2012 M5 sedan, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 and now, the Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition from Insideline.
So, before you watch the video test, let's do a quick rundown on the numbers:
The 2013 GT-R has a 545HP and 463 lb-ft 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 linked to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission driving all-four wheels, and a starting price of $97,820, with the test car costing $100,820 due to the $3,000 Super Silver paint option.
On the other side of the ring, we have the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition powered by a 7.0-liter pushrod V8 pushing out 505HP and 470 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
The Z06 starts at $76,500, but the test car's options such as the $8,815 3LZ Premium Equipment Group, $4,950 Centennial Special Edition package, $7,500 Z06 Ultimate Performance package (with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes), and $3,995 carbon-fiber package lift the price to $101,760.

2013 Corvette 427 Unleashed - Chevrolet is sending their C6 into retirement with a special edition claimed to be the fastest open-top Corvette ever.The 2013 Corvette 427 convertible features some great performance and terrific design lines meant to show the best Chevy can do with their C6.Running on a LS7 V8 engine, the 427 can put out 505hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission.

With plenty of aerodynamic styling cues and carbon fiber pieces, the 2013 'Vette can run from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of over 190mph. It can run the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds.Standard features included on the 427 are General Motors' Magnetic Selective Ride Control, 19-inch wheels in the front and 20-inch wheels in the back wrapped in Michelin PS2 rubbers. Optional black Cup or chrome ZR1 wheels are also available.The fun doesn't stop there with 'Vette news, as a new 60th Anniversary Package will also be made available by the Bow-Tie badge company.

The package includes Arctic White exterior paint and a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior. It also includes 60th Anniversary badges, a ZR1-inspired spoiler and racing stripes.The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible and 2013 Corvette 60th Anniversary Package will debut at a Barrett Jackson event in Arizona on January 21st. Both will be available starting this summer.

It was for sale on Ebay a while back for a cool $86,000!

GM Boss Mark Reuss Builds a Fantasy Supercar Out of the Company’s Parts Bin

Almost every car fan has, at one point or another, considered building his ideal car: for example, one with a Ferrari or Lamborghini bodywork, a Pagani interior, a Veyron engine, Porsche everyday usability and all this at the price of a used 300,000-mile Ford Escort… Well, the automotive term for this is a parts bin special; that is, a model built by borrowing only (or mostly) existing parts from other models. Mark Reuss, GM’s North American president, was asked by Car & Driver to assemble his dream car by using components that already exist on the company’s shelves.
We have to admit that, even though General Motors is not the first carmaker that comes to mind when picking components to assemble our dream car, Reuss has managed to conjure a pretty interesting vehicle.
The bodywork would come from the 2002 Cadillac Cien concept, which Reuss believes “defined Cadillac”.
Up front, the Chevrolet Volt's 149HP electric motor would power the front wheels, while GM’s turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 linked to a Corvette differential would power the rear axle, making the car an all-wheel drive hybrid.
The Volt would also donate its T-shaped battery pack (after it has been cleared by the NHTSA, we presume), mounted between the seats and wirelessly charged through an inductive mat making cables unnecessary.
America’s favorite supercar, the Corvette, would contribute in the handling department with its magnetorheological dampers and the ZR1's carbon-ceramic brakes, while GM’s pony car, the Camaro, would provide the ZL1’s Goodyear F1 SuperCar G performance tires.
Reuss is even talking numbers: the hybrid powertrain would churn out a total of 440HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0-60mph [96km/h] acceleration time of 3.2 seconds. In fact, he went as far as predicting his dream car’s Nürburgring lap time: 7:46. Not ZR-1 or GT-R territory, but quite fast nevertheless.
What about the interior? Well, Reuss would choose the suede steering wheel from the Caddy CTS-V linked to an electric-power steering system, the Recaro bucket seats from the Opel Insignia OPC and a Volt-like multifunction display for energy and VBox info.
Last, but not least, GM North America's president would like his dream car to have a silent interior when in EV mode so he would add a Bose active-noise cancelling system and offer perfect visibility courtesy of a Hughes night-vision system, front and rear cameras and a blind-spot monitoring system.
We applaud Mr Rauss' choices, which would make for one of the best "parts bin special" GM has ever thought of building.
He did omit one thing though: his passenger of choice. Therefore, we feel compelled to make a suggestion: Gisele. She did make a name for herself in the automotive crowd in a CTS-V after all...
