Acura's new ILX is based on the Honda Civic and is Acura's first hybrid gasoline-electric drive system. With a choice of three powertrains, it will appeal even to the youngsters who fear that going “green” involves a sacrifice on power and thrill in cars. It also comes with other enhanced features to encourage the younger generation to adopt the eco friendly ways of transport, few among which are a keyless entry system, an internet radio interface, an SMS text message function and an optional technology package.
Arriving with the best in its category of clean and green cars is the Energi PHEV, which promises to deliver more than 100 miles a gallon. With the Fusion Hybrid's 2.0 liters Atkinson-cycle engine present at its core, the powertrain seems to be well matched with a Li-ion battery. Although the details of the battery size, charging times etc. are not yet out in public, we can be assured of a high performer from Ford's reputation and the claims made so far. This clean car is sure to bring dramatic changes in the mid-size segment of the cars. By empowering customers with the greater powering options along with the luxury, this green vehicle is sure to become a favorite among the customers.
This Lexus concept leaves no doubts as far as the looks and styling are concerned. It will simply sweep you off your feet. The sexy curves, glass roof, cantilevered pillar, grille and lamps are all awesome. The best part however is the fact that it would be a Hybrid car. Lexus is yet to deliver the specifications but the very fact that an ultra-luxury car with the best possible technological features is planning a hybrid is good news for the “green” fans and enthusiasts. This car will definitely change the belief that going green involves giving up luxuries.
Nissan is not new in the hybrid segment. It has produced the highly successful green car termed as LEAF, which has won many Green Car awards. The e-NV 200 would be targeting at families and businesses. It will feature battery range comparable with LEAF and promises a greener future. With a promised range over 70 miles and a gasoline equivalent of almost 100 miles per gallon this minivan is almost as good as the LEAF in its features and performance. Nissan’s green minivan has been chosen to replace Crown Vic as a taxi of the great New York City.
A full-sized, light duty pickup truck powered by a 100 mpg VTRUX is ready to roll out from Via Motors. This extended range electric vehicle claims to run about 30 to 40 miles on battery. Its range gets a kick to 350 miles when the battery is used in tandem with the generator that works an average of 100 miles per gallon. It is admirably smooth and silent and promises a top speed of 85 mph. Operational costs are as low as 60 cents for an equivalent of a gallon of gas and the truck also has external charging outlets to charge camping gear, power tools and even a house if required.
BMW is out with a high-priced hybrid that they hope to popularize in light of the growing concern and interest in “green” vehicles. Though we do not yet have the fuel economy figures for the ActiveHybrid 5, we know for sure that it combines the flawless 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine along with a Li-ion battery pack. The combined output is estimated to be about 335HP and the huge car will be able to move on electric power for a distance of about 2.5 miles at about 35 mph. Not too much of the “green” oomph for the huge price being charged. It is felt that only those who are crazy about BMW and the “green” drive would want to drive this one.
The Acura NSX is back in a new avatar with a faster, leaner and greener outlook. By using a combination of dual-clutch transmission with direct-injected V-6 engine along with an electric motor, this all-wheel drive is yet to be rated on its performance and efficiency figures. But this much is for sure that the car has a lighter chassis than the original Acura and has a stronger powertrain. We can thus be assured of a highly improved and eco friendly performance. Though it is at the concept stage, the company promises an environmentally friendly car with better handling and great Sports car looks.
In an attempt to “hit two segments in one release”, Volkswagen has offered the Jetta Hybrid and the E-Bugster. The latter is a pure electric vehicle with a promised range of 100 miles on its 114 horsepower electric motor. It looks like the beetle but has a lower roof. The Jetta Hybrid has been inspired from the success of the Jetta compact car and it shows German engineering at its best. It promises speeds of 44 mph using only electricity and comes with a fuel efficiency rating of about 45 miles per gallon. The hybrid has a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine along with a 27 HP electric motor.
Following the trend of releasing twin cars, Mercedes Benz has also released a pair of hybrid vehicles dubbed as E400 and E300. Both the cars carry similar external designs and hi-tech onboard functions. While the E300 BlueTec Hybrid has a 2-liter turbo diesel engine with a 20 KW electric motor, the E400 hybrid has a more powerful 3.5 liter V6 engine along with the 20 KW motor. With a fuel economy of 67.2mpg, the E300 features an interesting “sail” mode in which the car becomes completely electric after the initial acceleration up to speed of 100 mph. The E400 however, boasts of a top speed of 130 mph. Both the cars have auto start/stop to save fuel at lights and other stops.
The Volvo XC60 has retained it aesthetic looks while coming on the scene with a new green engine. It has been claimed to be immensely powerful and economical car. A four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine works in tandem with a 71PS all-electric engine that gives the car a total of 354PS. The car allows the driver to decide the utilization of power from the combination of the engines. The car also features a newly developed, eight-speed automatic transmission. It could be recharged completely within 3.5 hours on a 220 V source (takes 7 hours with a 110 V source), which ensures that the car can run about 12 miles only on electricity.
